Practice Philosophy
My Philosophy

Over the years I have listened to my patients and feel that they want to become an active participant in their care. Too often they feel rushed, and communicating with their physician seems difficult. This website is in response to my desire to continue to meet my patients' comprehensive needs, by providing them with a means by which they can take a more active role in their own healthcare.

Some may ask "What is a family physician?" A family physician is a physician who is educated and trained in family practice a broadly encompassing medical specialty. Family physicians possess unique attitudes, skills, and knowledge which qualify them to provide continuing and comprehensive medical care, health maintenance and preventive services to each member of the family regardless of sex, age or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral, or social. These specialists, because of their background and interactions with the family, are best qualified to serve as each patient's advocate in all health-related matters, including the appropriate use of consultants, health services, and community resources.

I strongly feel that my medical expertise must be intertwined with a preventative and educational component. With rising medical costs, frustration with the current health care system, and (as people live longer) the rise of many chronic diseases, new approaches to health care must be created. I believe that disease (or dis-ease) does not occur in a vacuum. To me, the fundamental feature of my practice is treating my patients as whole human beings, not parts or diseases. This includes addressing nutritional, social, family and psychological issues with my patients when appropriate.

Teaching is an important part of my practice, both teaching my patients as well as helping develop new physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. I helped start the Family Medicine Residency training program at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Woodland Hills, and was its first Associate Program Director. I currently hold a faculty position as Assistant Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine. As an educator in family medicine, I have lectured extensively on herbal and nutritional supplements, the effects of television on children, adolescent medicine topics, family systems and their affect on illness, and depression and other mental health issues.

In these days of "managed care", I want you My Patient to know that YOU are the most important part of my practice and that my staff and I are all here to help you stay well, and get better when you are not.
